Jill Mortimer was invited the Landfill Site in Seaton which was recently acquired by SMLF, to meet with new Site Manager, Kevin Lancaster.
Following the fire at the site in January, residents have raised concerns with their local MP, Jill Mortimer. Following the visit, Jill says she feels “reassured” by the new ownership.
Jill also used the opportunity to find out more about what SMLF is planning for the site, including preventative measures and environmental compliance.
Site Manager, Kevin has a strong professional background in environmental compliance and has made it a priority to ensure the site is compliant with all Environment legislation. The site is now complaint with “The Landfill (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2005”, “Waste Acceptance Criteria 2005” and the “Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2009”.
SMLF have taken their environmental decisions a step further than what is required or seen as best practice, and they are now offsetting all carbon emissions to make their site Net Zero, and using waste methane gas to create power for the national grid.
Speaking after the visit, Jill Mortimer MP said:
“This visit has reassured me that SMLF have Seaton resident’s safety and quality of life at the heart of all their decision making.
“These residents live on the boarder of what has the potential to be a hazardous waste site, as any would be if not managed correctly.
“Not only are they on top of all Government legislation, but Kevin and the team are thinking outside of the box to be as ethical and environmentally friendly as they can be. I’m particularly satisfied with their decision to cover the site when it reaches the end of life.
“This will make the space more natural and offer the community the chance to reclaim the land, or create something new from it.”
